We spent K19.5bn on Levy’s expenses and subsequent death – George Kunda

Vice-President George Kunda has said in parliament that the Government spent K19.5 billion during the illness and subsequent death of President Mwanawasa in Paris, France. He said this in a written response to Luapula MP Peter Machungwa (PF).
Dr Machungwa wanted to know how much money Government spent in relation to security and other government officials’ stay in France, air fares and allowances for ministers and family members who travelled to Paris, upkeep of the then First Lady, Maureen Mwanawasa and her entourage in Paris, transporting the remains of Dr Mwanawasa to all provincial centres in Zambia and the funeral ceremony in Lusaka and the burial.
Mr Kunda said in his response that Government spent K2,196,098,134 for the security and other government officials’ stay in France, K481,106,342.12 on air fares and allowances for ministers and family members who travelled to Paris and K117, 835,227.40 for the upkeep of Mrs Mwanawasa and her entourage in Paris.
Mr Kunda said K9,193,111,480.00 was spent for transporting the remains of the late President to all provincial headquarters and K7,529,450,057.89 for the funeral ceremony in Lusaka, including burial, bringing the total expenditure to K19,517,601,241.61.
