A Lusaka Magistrate’s Courth has today acquitted former Republican president Federick Chiluba over corruption charges he was facing involving the theft of US $500,000.
The marathon judgment delivered by Ndola High Court Registrar Johns Chinyama, sitting as a magistrate that took about six hours to deliver however found his co-accused Access Financial Services Limited former directors Aaron Chungu and Faustin Kabwe guilty.
According to the judgment, the acquittal was based on the fact that the prosecution team failed to prove their case beyond reasonable doubt on all counts against the former president.
There was wild jubilation as sympathisers chanted pro-Chiluba songs as he left the court buildings.
He immediately announced that he would be holding a press conference at his Kabulonga residence this evening.

This is sad, i dont even know what to really say
1I do not support corruption, but when you come up with accusations on leaders that you elect, you need to be well rounded to know politics in and out. You need facts and evidence to prove your case. Zambian politicians are all sunk with corruption, including the ones( prosecutors) that come out to prosecute others. They are scam bugs when you dig them down.
That is what happens when you bring shoes as evidence to the case even publicizing that on the internet as evidence to the claim.
In the western world shoes and used car are not that important. They laughed and they are still laughing about the evidence that was put forward. Chiluba’s closet.
People throw shoes in the dumpsters, and if that is what the prosecutor was bringing up as evidence to prove that he stole $500,000, any court would let him free.
They needed evidence, like wire transfers from one bank to another, his fat bank accounts, properties and so forth.
Shoes, and his suits. That was embarransing evidence.
Time to move on please.
2Thankyou
It is extremely disappointing to hear such news BUT am personally not shocked, Chiluba’s freedom was inevitable… I mean this case was supposed to have been over the moment they (prosecutors) started probbing. There was truely enough evidence to use against Chiluba but the moment they started dragging shoes in the issue we should have known it was a lost cause.
Perhaps if Levy was still alive the outcome might have been different because it seems like he was the only one brave enough to do the Zambian people Justice. Chiluba destroyed many lives and I know this for certain because I come from the copperbelt, Luanshya to be exact and I saw first hand the kind of confusion which arose during the privatisation era (people lost houses and Jobs and mining towns became Ghost towns).
Now suddenly Chiluba is the victim, this my people is pure evidence of how corrupt Zambia really is. We need to do something radical about this cancer (corruption), our leaders have no will to serve us – the only thing that concerns them is money and power.
This is clear truth that has been shown to our faces- the law of the land is corrupt, justice is perverted, our leaders are fools. They gave Aaron Chungu and Faustin Kabwe 3 years, please three years is as eqivalent to a comon theif who stole three 90kg bags of sweet potatoes. 3 years is a slap on the wrist for stealing US $500,000 I stand to be corrected but that might be roughly around K30 billion.
My people these are men who stole billions of kwacha from YOU!! taxpayers – that money could have greatly assisted a grandmother taking care of 7 children in some village somewhere, built clinics, improved living conditions for people in the slums (ghettos). We must not allow such perversion to continue for the sake of our children and those after them – Let us start returning to Truth centered leadership “Serve the people not the President”.
Shalom.
3Exactly. Very true Ben Isreal
