Minister of Education Dora Siliya says lack of adequate sports infrastructure in schools is hindering the development of sport in the country.

Siliya said Government was aware of the various challenges schools have been facing such as limited and dilapidated sport facilities.

She was speaking in a speech read on her behalf by Ministry of Education Director of Planning Felix Phiri when Sport-In-Action (SIA) and Northumbria University School of Built Environment handed over a refurbished multi-purpose sports court to Kabulonga Girls High School.

Siliya said limited qualified human resource was another factor that was frustrating sports development in Zambia.

She explained that Government was happy that SIA and Northumbria University have created partnership aimed at improving sport in Zambia and changing lives of many children.

SIA and Northumbria University School of Built Environment spent K55 million on refurbishing the tennis and basketball court, which can also be used for squash.

Siliya commended SIA and Northumbria for the contribution thy have been rendering to the development of Zambian sport.

Siliya urged SIA and Northumbria to sustain the partnership and extend the gesture to other schools.

SIA president Clement Chileshe said his association will continue rendering support to youth sport. Chileshe said SIA and its partners will continue promoting individual sports disciplines.

He said SIA will concentrate on uplifting tennis standards for the next four years.

He pledged to also help refurbish the swimming pool at the school.

Chileshe said the court will also be used by other schools in Lusaka.

The newly elected Copperbelt Amateur Bodybuilding Association (CABBA) executive will soon start visiting clubs in the region to offer training tips to members in a bid to raise the profile of the sport.

President Gilbert Moono said there was a huge misunderstanding between bodybuilding and weightlifting and unfortunately, even some bodybuilders did not understand the difference.

Moono said as a way of drawing a line between the two sports disciplines, his association’s technical committee would be going to all gymnasiums on the Copperbelt to teach bodybuilders which training types were for bodybuilding and weightlifting.

“A lot of people do not know the difference between these two sports. The problem is that even some bodybuilders undertake weightlifting sessions in training and mess up their bodies ahead of major competitions,” he said.

Moono was elected last week as president of the Copperbelt body replacing Paul Marias.

He said among issues that would be looked at during the tours would be the diet for the bodybuilders in order to improve their performance to compete at a higher level.

He said it was unfortunate that some bodybuilders went to competitions not unprepared saying the conduct was unprofessional.

He attributted this to lack of knowledge on certain technicalities.

“It is a serious problem, but we have to start addressing it, sometimes you find bodybuilders taking weightlifting sessions when preparing for a bodybuilding contest.
We shall also be teaching them how to pose,” he said.

In a game played on Saturday in the Zambia Rugby Football Union (ZRFU) League Cup at Nkana West Playing Field in Kitwe, Diggers Rugby Club, also known as “Men at Work” thumped Mufulira Rugby Club.

Kabwela Mulenga placed three tries with Robert Chilundami scoring two while Benaya Mukwamba and Maybin Mwape contributed one each. Benaya, who was the crowd’s favourite, was also responsible for two conversions, with Mulenga also converting one try in a match Mufulira failed to show any seriousness.

As for Diggers, the victory has enhanced their ambition of reclaiming the title from “Powerhouse” Lusaka.

Meanwhile, Lusaka failed to make use of homeground advantage when they allowed Green Buffaloes to hold them at the Showgrounds in Lusaka.

World International Boxing Association (WIBA) president Ryan Wissow confirmed that Zambia’s female boxing star Esther will fight Brazil-based Duda Yankovich in the light welterweight category instead of super featherweight champion Melissa Hernandez of the USA as earlier announced.

“There has been a change of plan. Esther can no longer make 130 pounds [58.9 kg] and her manager asked me to arrange another title fight at a higher weight. So I got Duda Yankovich to defend her WIBA light welterweight world title at 140 pounds [63.5kg] against Esther Phiri on December 26th at Woodlands Stadium,” Wissow announced.

Phiri’s trainer Anthony Mwamba of Exodus Stables refused to confirm the development, saying he would announce when the right time comes.

“I am her trainer and I will tell you when everything is set,” said Mwamba.

Sport, Youth and Child Development Minister, Kenneth Chipungu said in an interview yesterday that his ministry would ensure necessary support was rendered to the Chipolopolo in the remaining qualifiers for the 2010 African Cup and World Cup to be held in Angola and South Africa, respectively.

Chipungu was reacting to FAZ’s request for two chefs to travel with the team to Algeria for the September 6 qualifier.

FAZ last week asked the Government for two chefs to travel with the team to Algeria, saying they did not want to leave anything to chance looking at the importance of the game.

Chipungu implored the team to bring positive results from Algeria. It would be the only way Zambia would remain in contention for the World Cup slot.

He was optimistic Zambia still had chances of being at the World Cup if they did well in the remaining qualifiers.

Zambia is sharing four points with reigning African champions, Egypt in group C that has Algeria enjoying the summit with seven points while Rwanda trails at the bottom with a point.

The Parliamentary committee on Sport, Youth and Child Affairs says the construction of the Chinese funded stadium in Ndola is massive investment for the country.

The Parliamentary committee toured the Ndola Stadium construction site yesterday en-route to Kitwe for an on-the-spot check of sports infrastructure at the Copperbelt University.

Chairman of the committee, Levy Ngoma, said in Ndola yesterday that the Chinese should not be demonised but instead appreciated for the development they are contributing to the nation.

“This is good investment…investment for a right purpose, we have seen this for ourselves,” said Ngoma, who is Sinda Member of Parliament.

Other members of Parliament in the entourage were Pambashe MP Bernard Chisha, Marjory Masiye (Mufulira), Emmanuel Munaile (Malole) (Independent), Brian Ntundu (Gwembe) and Ben Mweemba (Magoye).

Apart from checking on sports infrastructure in learning institutions, Ngoma said the committee was also following up on child labour matters.

The committee is expected to proceed to Solwezi, North Western Province for a similar mission.

ZescoUnited international striker Jonas Sakuwaha is tomorrow expected to leave for France to complete his move to Ligue one side FC Lorient subject to passing medicals.

Zesco secretary Justin Mumba said in Lusaka yesterday that the two clubs have already agreed terms.
Mumba said FC Lorient want Sakuwaha by tomorrow.

“We are applying for a visa tomorrow (today) and we hope it will be ready by the end of the day so that he leaves by Wednesday,” he said.

Mumba, however, could not disclose the duration of the contract.

“We have finalised everything and what is remaining is for Jonas to attend medicals. We are confident he will pass the medicals,” he said.

Sakuwaha attended trials at FC Lorient from July 7 to 17.

Sakuwaha scored a hat-trick in Zesco’s 3-2 win over Sudanese giants El Merreikh in last Saturday’s Orange Champions League Group A match.

Simotowe finally records a win at African Individual Chess Championship

Zambia’s Amon Simutowe on Tuesday made a steady move into joint second at the on going African Individual Chess Championship in Libya after beating Donovan van den Heever of South Africa in round seven.

It was the second win for the Zambian, coming at the crucial stage of the tournament with two games left.
Grandmaster Simutowe now has four and half points in joint second place with seven other players, a point behind the Egyptian GM duo – Ahmed Adly and Bassem Amin who are the leaders at the competition.

The Zambian on white pieces outwitted van den Heever on board five to improve his points tally while Amin and Adly both chalked wins to move to 5.5 points, one point clear of the second placed.

Amin beat his Egyptian compatriot Khaled Abdel-Razik who has had a good share of command at the tournament and relegated him to joint second while Adly emerged on top in an all GM battle with Slim Belkhodja of Tunisia.

The Tunisian, like Simutowe on 4.5 points, share the second position with Abdel-Razik, Essam El Gindy, Walaa Sarwat of Egypt Kenny Solomon and Watu Kobese both from South Africa.

Last night in round eight, Simutowe was paired against International Master (IM) Abdel-Razik, a game the Zambian needed to collect full points in his quest to win the African title as Amin and Adly faced each other in a top-of-the-table clash.

The final round games will be played this morning in Tripoli and six top finishers at the tournament will qualify for the World Chess Cup scheduled for Russia.
The event drew 34 African players.
