Minister of Education Dora Siliya says lack of adequate sports infrastructure in schools is hindering the development of sport in the country.
Siliya said Government was aware of the various challenges schools have been facing such as limited and dilapidated sport facilities.
She was speaking in a speech read on her behalf by Ministry of Education Director of Planning Felix Phiri when Sport-In-Action (SIA) and Northumbria University School of Built Environment handed over a refurbished multi-purpose sports court to Kabulonga Girls High School.
Siliya said limited qualified human resource was another factor that was frustrating sports development in Zambia.
She explained that Government was happy that SIA and Northumbria University have created partnership aimed at improving sport in Zambia and changing lives of many children.
SIA and Northumbria University School of Built Environment spent K55 million on refurbishing the tennis and basketball court, which can also be used for squash.
Siliya commended SIA and Northumbria for the contribution thy have been rendering to the development of Zambian sport.
Siliya urged SIA and Northumbria to sustain the partnership and extend the gesture to other schools.
SIA president Clement Chileshe said his association will continue rendering support to youth sport. Chileshe said SIA and its partners will continue promoting individual sports disciplines.
He said SIA will concentrate on uplifting tennis standards for the next four years.
He pledged to also help refurbish the swimming pool at the school.
Chileshe said the court will also be used by other schools in Lusaka.
