Hakainde Hichilema (born June 4, 1962) is the President of Zambia’s United Party for National Development (UPND).
He replaced Anderson Mazoka after an interparty election, organized by then functioning party president Sakwiba Sikota, which followed Mazoka’s death in May 2006.
He is also President of the opposition alliance United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which comprises FDD, UPND and UNIP.
Mr. Hichilema popularly known as Sammy by his close associates is married to Mutinta Hichilema and they have three children, daughter Miyanda (12), and sons Habwela (9) and Chikonka (6).
He is a graduate of UNZA where he studied economics and business between 1981-1986 after which he went to the United Kingdom where he did his Masters in Business Administration - MBA.
His professional career includes positions such as assistant consultant at Equator Advisory Services. At Coopers & Lybrand he held various positions including that of director, corporate advisor and he also served as CEO from 1994-1998. When Coopers & Lybrand changed its name to Grant Thornton, he was named Managing Partner of the firm.
Mr. Hichilema is Chairman of the board(s) for Sun International, Greenbelt Fertilizers Ltd, Media Trust Fund, Export Development Program and sits on various boards as director including the Zambia Investment Board, Seedco Zambia, African Financial Services Limited, Zambezi Nickel or Bermuda Limited (Bermuda) and West Lake Investments (Mauritius).
He also sits on seven other boards in member capacity which include but not limited to the Zambia Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Zambia Business Forum, etc.
As a presidential candidate for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) he ran against incumbent president Levy Mwanawasa of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy and Patriotic Front candidate Michael Sata.
Mr. Hichilema received the endorsement of former president Kenneth Kaunda. The elections were held on September 28, 2006, and Hichilema took third place with about 25% of the vote while other estimates say he actually come in second when the final tally is scrutinized.
In this week’s memo, he is being contrasted with Mr. Michael C Sata whose profile was posted against Dr. Lewanika and we don’t see any sense in us reposting it.
We hope pundits will look at a veracity of issues pertaining to both qualities as well as qualification of who we should put forward as the nation’s chief executive officer for the Zambian Enterprise in these perilous times.
That’s this week’s memo from us at the Zambian Chronicle … thanks a trillion.

Mr.sata vs Hichilema–As have mentioned earlier KING COBRA is the only politician with a CV or profile of ACTIONS.The rest are just power hungry. They have no vision for this country..all their manfestos are cut copies of Mr.satas vision-quite okey they have CVs on paper some of them hunged on wall in picture frames in thier sitting rooms…but education or knowledge with out ACTION is useless and pehalps the greatest contributing factor to Zambias problems.HAKAINDE was one of the educated few of those who were auctioning ZAMBIAN COMPANIES….what do you think this man going to do when he becomes PRESIDENT?He will first of all sale ROADS and lastly sale the TONGA LAND…..COMMENTS on MR.SATAs back to school reserved…
February 17, 2008 at 8:19 am
I am not quite sure you know what you are talking about. Can you name me one company that was auctioned by HH?. People like you continue sprouting nonsense that HH sold RAMCOZ. Not surprising for a fanatical supporter of Sata. HH never did anything of that sort. For your own information and other ill educated Sata supporters; I would like you to know that RAMCOZ was put under recievership by ZANACO-a State owned Bank. Grant Thornton of which HH was Managing Partner, was merely appointed Administrator. The remaining Assets of RAMCOZ were auctioned by the Mwanawasa cabinet in 2004 through the ZPA. And by the way when Luanshya Division was sold to Binani in 1997, it was Francis Kaunda and Luke Mwananshiku (Chiluba’s appointees) who were managing privatisation process (this was done outside the ZPA Act). So please if you think the country has been messed you should at least know where to pin the blame.

Dont enter into debates with a small heart.thats my oppinion put forward yours than being annoyed for nothing otherwise you will develop BP.This is a national issue which needs serious brains to debate…not light hearted people. We have to think abnormal to know who to blame….But I WANT to let you know that whoever participated into selling any zambia assets whether a public toilet must not be trusted for anything…..people have been claiming billions of assets ask them how they made thier money…Lets be focussed and face our problems with crean hands…
February 17, 2008 at 1:57 pm
You seem to be completely in the dark of what you are talking about. Binani, the Indian company to whom chiluba sold Luanshya division of ZCCM, raked up debts worth millions of dollars owed to among others ZANACO and Copperbelt Energy. The latter was owed $20m in energy bills. What led to this development was that Chiluba’s appointees sold Luanshya division to the wrong people. Sata was in Chiluba’s cabinet in 1997 so he was part and parcel of these crooks. In 2000 Zanaco put RAMCOZ under receivership to try and recoup their money. Grant Thornton were technically debt collectors. Hence it is very unreasonable of you to suggest that HH was involved in the selling off Zambian assets. That is a gross misrepresentation of facts. It is one trait common in Sata and his followers. By the way I do not think that either HH or Sata are qualified enough to be President. But in so doing I would not make wild and unfounded allegations on either of them which are not based on fact!

Thanks guys for your debate.
Mr Kabaso as you can see we kept scores for Mr Sata, and now we would like to hear more about him and Hichilema. What we are doing here is very healthy for every Zambian that has a right to vote. If we can all open our minds to think outside our boxes, come 2011, we be ready to pick the right candidate.
Mr Mbulawa,
Feel free to nominate a candidate that you feel will be best for Zambians. Right now we are just picking from the 2006 aspiring candidates that did not make it. We know that Castro Chiluba has just joined politics. We all need to know his intentions for 2011. Before he knows it, we will be ahead of his agenda,as we at Zambian Chronicle are here to help our fellow Zambians choose great leaders for 2011.
We are doing this so we can identify quality leadership before hand.
However thanks for your comments.
Mbulawa feels neither one of the two will make a great president. Throw in any name you feel can do better as president for 2011.
Bring it on guys. We all want to hear facts, come 2011 we will all know who is right for the office.
At least we have a supporter on each candidate this time.
We are keeping the scores, the winning candidate will move to round three.
Thanks a trillion for your comments.

Mr Kabaso –
There can be no doubt that education is the foundational building block of every advanced society from ancient Egypt to the Roman Empire to the current Pacific Rim economic boom. Unfortunately, my friend, you confuse two completely different concepts when you speak of educated people not creating businesses. The ability to create a business deals with the entrepreneurial spirit. Many of the world’s great entrepreneurs were not formally educated. Take Thomas Edison, for instance. He was named the man of the millenium for all his great inventions. Despite being from a poor background, he was a genius. This was an undeniable gift from God. Yet Edison was a champion of education and spent much of his fortune helping fellow Americans obtain the training he lacked. He depended on his legions of scientists and chemist and engineers to make his visions a reality. And as far as Bill Gates is concerned, he did indeed drop out of Harvard University. What you fail to realize is that Gate’s father was a wealthy, prominent lawyer. Because he came from privilege, he was able to drop out and continue his work without worrying about paying his bills or taking care of his family. Without his father’s education and success as an attorney, he would never have been able to start Microsoft. Besides, Bill Gates openly admits that he stole the DOS operating system from other software engineers.
Moreover, it has been proven through the centuries that a liberal arts education is the best way to develop a mind. This tradition comes directly from the Protestant Reformation, when men of God realized that it was a godly pursuit to study the nature of His creation rather than hide behind a veil of ignorance which allowed the elite clerics to tell people what to believe. Sir Isaac Newton, the father of modern physics, was a devout Christian. This was common among the great minds of his day. When you question why Zambian children should learn about Vasco DeGama or other apsects of history, you fail to remember that the best teacher for us in the present is what transpired in the past. The liberal arts education emphasizes an exposure to many intellectual disciplines because all knowledge works together. Nothing occurs in a vacuum. One of the reasons western civilisation was dominant throughout the world is because they saw the “big picture”. This is the kind of thinking that a broad liberal arts education provides. It has been proven scientifically that when children learn to play an instrument or participate in other cognitive activities, their brains develop both faster and better.
The truth is that if Zambia is ever to rise above its borders and take its place in the world community, it must look past itself and pursue a big picture vision of its proper place in the world. We live in a global community. No nation, except possibly North Korea, is an island unto itself. It is no coincidence that North Korea is arguably the most repressive nation on the face of the earth. They have no economy and exist based on handouts from the Chinese and the United States. Until Zambia places a renewed emphasis on education and produces doctors, chemists, engineers and the like, it will continue to be little more than a footstool for other nations and predatory foreign interests. These same scientists, doctors and chemists will be the ones who eventually end the plague of AIDS. If you think the western nations will save you, think again. As the old saying goes, God helps those who help themselves. It is time for Zambia to learn from history and have its own reformation — God will honor a commitment to excellence in attitude, education and conduct. Where He is glorified, there is power. I pray that Zambia will tap into this power by using the minds God gave them. The intellect is there — the first African born chess grand master is a Zambian. How many other great minds are currently being sacrificed by the small minded minority that is content never to progress, but to merely exist?
I believe that Mr Hakainde Hichilema would make a worthy president if Zambia is to move forward. Between his impressive educational background, exposure to international commerce and his extensive business connections, he is uniquely suited to guide Zambia into the 21st century.

simon12,
… I totally agree, it is for the reasons you stated above that I personally supported Mr. Hichilema’s candidacy in the last election … thanks a trillion.
Ba Kabaso,
… I think you are not really off tangent here and your critical reasoning is superb, you just need to add another dimension to it to change the dynamics, never short change yourself … thanks a trillion
February 19, 2008 at 11:16 pm
I still wonder why we did not elect a highly qualified individual as Hichilema last time around.
I think the people of Zambia need to look at this man seriously come 2011 because we really need people like him to move forward.
Have you ever wondered Botswana is always ahead of the curve? It is because they don’t fool around when electing their leaders.
They go the best individual available and look at their economy, it can compete with those of the European Union very easily.
February 20, 2008 at 5:25 am
Thanks a trillion Mr Kabwe for your comment. You nailed it.
Even the outside world commented the same way you did.
So let us not fool around for 2011.Here at Zambian chronicle are very serious about the debate. We have each and every candidate’s profile. Critically, Zambians should go through screening each candidate one by one before they are voted into office.
We trust your judgement, but it takes team work to make things happen. You are all smart people, please open your minds, be liberal as you choose your next president.
The reason for our failure is Zambians do not see the big picture, because of wako ni wako problem ( Tribal) so we normally do not see the credentials of a candidate. We always look at tribe and how vocal a candidate is. What we forget is the president has to compete with the outside world. Example of what happened recently on a contraceptive drug. Do you think if we had very highly educated personnel, we could have gone through the drama DR Brian Chituwo the health minister brought for poor Zambian women. The issue has gone quiet, because he has no strong tool to prove his concerns. he relied on South Africa. What a shame. All he needed was to go through the Internet and use a search engine to do his own Research and investigations on the drug. Why rely on South Africa? he would have known all the side effect of the drug. But Instead he turned around and blamed the technician. We thought that was too goof.
We at Zambian Chronicles did our own research and found out that the drug has bad side effects, and it is a reject by the western world.
It was easy to shut our minister up because they knew he does not have a skill to find out what we at Zambian chronicles, find out in one day.
The other reasons for our failure is,most smart people do not vote. Instead we all sit back and watch people from the villages vote a president on behalf of every Zambians. Why do you think politicians, target villagers and shanty compounds with their campaigns? Because they know non educated people will never question their integrity.
That is one of the reasons we are so screwed up with corrupted leadership.
Zambia needs a president and his cabinet that can look beyond their nose and be able to stand competetively with the outside world, without boot leaking any one. Western world respects people with education.
That is how some of us have managed to survive in the western world. We do not settle for less. We have managed to hold managerial posts in the western world, because of the fixed asset that we hold (EDUCATION).
That is my vote…..EDUCATION.
Mr Sata is a man of action except the main problem is,his supporters are so backwards in their support, they are too violent. It is all about throwing stones and fighting. We do not need that kind of hungry for power situation,it is not healthy for the country, No civilized Zambian admires Rwanda or Kenya situation. We have to choose our leaders in peace, even the outside world will respect us.
Mr Kabwe What is your thought on Education?
Elaborate why you think Hichilema will make a best candidate for Zambia. Your comments will help many Zambians to have a vision for a right candidate. The more you talk about positives and negatives of a candidate, the more it helps most of us to see logic.
I will try to stay as neutral as I can. since I am keeping scores for each candidate.
I will add my comments at the end of the round.
I am so big on education, that does not mean I am supporting any of the candidates.
I feel guys who are able to speak out like Mr Kabaso, and yourself are good thinkers and will be helping every Zambian to see through the candidates they are choosing.
Thanks a trillion,
Belliah
February 20, 2008 at 6:57 am
Thanks BELLIAH…I totally agree with you in all the issues you have raised on Mr,SATA but the only reason why you sometimes see Mr.satas supporters turn violent is when their leader is manupilated, they feel dribbled by the Govenrmrnt of the day.Today the Government has poached PF MPs and councillors into NCC to vote against their master.Right now everyone is very desparate to make a submittion that KING cobra should not stand in 2011 because of age and when you see his people riot who should be bramed? Is it sata or the manipulators?
On the issue of Health.AS an un educated Mr.sata is, he changed the ministry of health than any minister from that time today. One thing you should understand though i stand to be corrected..is that DR.Brian Chituwo is a Doctor of medicine not a N”GANGA or a MUCHAPE he is very educated to accept the poisonous substances which has possed danger to our ladies. These are some of the educated few we want to entrust zambia with?Am scared with their education which has continues motivate them to be accepting rotten drungs in hospital and what annoys me most is when we boast of EDUCATING scientists when they can not even detect side effects of certain drugs which comes into the country. it hates me when i see a scientific research centre just a white ELEPHANT.
On your question about HH,I fee the gentleman is well educted but the fact that he did not have zambians at heart untill MAZOKA died put me off from putting my money on him.The other reason is his tribe….you see you talked about tribalism and Mr.HHs tribe is more tribalistic than any other tribe. we need a leader who be well accepted by the all country.I hope you saw the tribalism am taking about in the past elections where only Mr. HH with 35000 votes against xxxx only with 200 votes.we need a leader who will be popular in all areas of Zambia and not a leader who is only popular in southern province and in a few pockets like wards of other provinces.we need reberal leader like MIKO to bring back the one Zambia one nation Than the tribalism of the 21st century we saw in southern and western provinces in 2006 elections. To devevelop Zambia we dont need to look at tribal lines.KK developed Zambia simply because he was not one sided. He opened kawambwa tea, mansa batteries and mununshi banana scheme in luapula,COFFEE plantation MPULUNGU harbour in the northen province,Bicycle plantation in eastern province and motor vehicle assemblying plant in southern province, pineapple canning industry in north western province, mulungushi texitile in central province and many other companies on the copperbelt and lusaka.Thats how KK promoted the one zambia one nation.

Thanks zambian chronicles for this wonderful programme but i want to take this opportunity to encourage you guys do more one this programme.Try and advertise your webside in the post news paper so that many zambians can participate and as for the general public i would recommend SMS ENTRIES..mind you there are over 2,500,000 people with mobile phones in zambia. so if you want to get information even from those who do not have access to a news paper Tv,or RADIOS atleast they have a mobile phone. If you need any futher information on this project please dont hesite to communicate.Together we can sensetise zambians on this important VISION.
February 20, 2008 at 8:04 am
If we look at the history of countries everyone would agree with me that BOTSWANA has a good economy not because they have chosen to use the best minds amongest themselves no…The fact is that BOTSWANA has more resorces than its population.Infact that country has more annimals than people.Historically people in BOTSWANA are not even well educated compared to Zambia. If i may to ask who runs the economy of BOTswana….PROFFESSIONS from zambia and other countries. All our brothers and sister who run away from the economic war in zambia are accoutants, teachers,Doctors and nurses and others are working in very important sectors of that countries economy.Infact Botswana import rape and chibwabwa from southafrica. The simple reason why the economy of that country is strong is for the fact that those guys have more diamonds and GOLD in their quota of funds at WORLD BANK and IMF than ZAMBIA.they have more say and voting powers when it comes to the rules which govern the two ORGANISATIONS.
When it comes to investments,Botswana does not allow foreigh investors who come in their country to run business own their own…EVERY FOREIGHNER who wants to invest in that country has to partner with swana which is not the case in ZAMBIA.In ZAMBIA foreighner are left to operate own their own which is making zambia loose billion of kwacha at the expense foreigh investors.Foreigh investors in zambia are un toucheables because if they are touched they will pull out of zambia.Today they are even refussing to pay taxes even threating to sue Government for increasing TAXES.
From the lessons have lent from BOTSWANA, it is true that leadership is not about education but good policies which will allows local people work with foreigh investors and when foreigh investors pulls out the local people will continue running the company which is not the case in zambia.Thats how BOTSWANS has made it…

Bella you asked me about my preferences for the Zambian presidency. Well, I have two people who I think can do the job. These two are Ngandu Magande or Felix Mutati. Both have a number of advantages or qualities necessarily for the presidency. First, both have the required level of education. Second, their behaviour and politics is devoid of partisanship i.e they are technically job-centred on their portfolios. This is what has made Botswana a success story. From independence Botswana has been run by non-political politicians i.e from the late Khama, to Masire through to Mogae all have been non-populists. Third, having Magande or Mutati will ensure continuity. Honestly, Mwanawasa may not be an inspiring person but his economic team has stabilised the economy at the macro-level. What we need now is experience, increasementalism and not revolution per se. Magande and Mutati will guarantee this. HH is inexperienced (he has never been in government before. We took a chance with Chiluba and our fingures got burnt). Sata is a populist ( Kaunda and Chiluba were also populists).Look where we ended up with those two.
February 20, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Mbulawa,
… please add Dr. Caleb Fundanga (current BOZ Governor) to the list in line with your choices, he would make a great president as well.
If you are agreeable, Belliah will add them to the list and we will start looking at them as well.
She will take care of the needful hopefully after or by next week. I would like her to take some time off the rest of this week …
Meanwhile, keep the ball rolling … thanks a trillion

Mr James Kabaso,
Thank you for your commitment to your country.Your ideas are welcome, as this site belongs to Zambians like yourself. Let us protect and improve a home for our future generation. We cannot continue running away from our own home due to poor leadership. We need a place we can call home. If you read Human rights reports, you may be shocked to see how Zambia is seen by the outside world. Can we make a change, YES WE CAN.
Together we can do it. Team work makes things happen.
Just to let you know one of our vision here at Zambia Chronicles for our mother Zambia our team is working on is to bring a technology, and talent career center, with a library with all educational books you can think of.
our team has been working on collecting books for the past four years. The only problem our team has, is dealing with corruption in Zambia.
Hopefully come 2011, we will choose leaders who have a heart and vision for their country, not just worrying how much they should pocket at the end of the term. We need leaders who are already financially stable, and can not easily be wisked in stealing the little from the Zambian people.
Thanks a trillion

Ba Kabaso,
… do you think Barrack Obama would have been this successful in his presidential bid in the Democratic Party in the United States if his profile was similar to King Cobra? Please advise … thanks a trillion
February 24, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Honestly, how does one insunuate that H.H’s tribe is the most tribal of all the tribes? It is unethical for Kabaso to think like that and one who is critical sees elements of trbalism in him as kabaso. Lets be critical when bringing out our arguments than trying to create unnecessary apprehensions that are detrimental to the development of this country. What variables is he using to determine his unrealistic argument? What he is saying cannot be even be statistically significant and hence it is not worth to bring it out in such situations in the 21st century.
February 25, 2008 at 12:17 am
Zambian,
Thanks for your comment, and welcome.
This debate has been in effect for two weeks. We are moving to week 3 of our debate. Read through the comments from other people, and post yours on week3 heading since it continues from last week. Only week 3 has an additional candidate nominated by Mbulawa last week.
We have Mr Sata’ supporters and Mr HH’s. We had Inonge Mbikusita Lewanika in week one, but we droped her since She had no support.
Last week we looked at HH and King Cobra. James Kabaso think Mr, Sata is the only candidate best for Zambia. We at Zambian Chronicle expressed concerns, about level of education our leaders hold.
Mr James Kabaso still insist education is not important for a Zambian president.
Zambian, What is your opinion on the three candidates. Who do you think can make a great president for 2011. Feel free to nominate your candidate. We shall include the name in the coming debate.
Thanks a trillion,
Belliah

data recovery…
Nice post … keep it up!…
June 11, 2008 at 4:50 pm
It is interesting that some people can still look at Sata as President for Zambia. He is a man of the past who only understands Mugabe politics. For heaven’s sake HH is the man regardless of where he hails from. We are all born into these ethnic groups without choosing to. Besides altho I do not come from Southern Province, I feel that on average our brothers and sisters from southern province are among the most humble and honest people you can come across in Zambia. A direct opposite of what comes from the likes of Kabaso. Lets vote for the most talented and promising Zambian not a Tonga, Bemba, Lozi, Ngoni or whatever it is. If we look on tribal ground, we have had two bembas in office and what good can we say about them?????? Atleast Levy has recorded some economic stability, is it because he is not a Bemba?? I put my money on President Hichilema a cool an level headed gentleman
June 12, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Ba Connie,
… welcome aboard!!! I just wanted to compliment you on your recent comment but I also wanted to encourage you to start looking beyond tribal barriers in the next election.
I believe that tribalism is immaterial in this 21st century dispensation but as punditry goes, so goes the nation and the debates thereto. If we, the new blood of modern day punditry, do not give tribalism any credence others give it, it will phase off as it should.
I would encourage you to look more to things/issues that unite us than those that divide us as we look forward to choosing the next CEO of our Zambian Enterprise solely based on merit and not any trivialities such as which tribe one hauls from … thanks a trillion.
