From 1995 to 2007, Forbes has ranked Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft (MSFT - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr), as the richest.
Recently, however, depending on the month and the source, Mexican businessman Carlos Slim Helu is No. 1. They both have estimated net worths of about $56 billion. Warren Buffett runs a close third place with an approximate net worth of $52 billion.
Stockpickr, which tracks the portfolios of these three wealthy individuals, has researched their stocks to determine if they have any holdings in common. Surprisingly, there were very few.
Both Carlos Slim and Warren Buffett own Kraft Foods (KFT - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr), the worldwide food conglomerate that sells everything from cookies and coffee to frozen pizzas and cheese. The stock has a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 20, a P/E-to-growth (PEG) ratio of 2.4, and pays a yield of 3.3%.
Kraft is also owned by another top trader, Nelson Peltz. This corporate raider/turnaround artist and activist shareholder’s hedge fund, Triarc, was up 37% in 2006. Peltz also likes Cadbury Schweppes (CSG - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr), in which he recently increased his stake from 3.47% to 4.5% of the company. Cadbury has a P/E ratio of 25, a PEG of 2.9, and yields 2.3%.
Peltz also likes HJ Heinz (HNZ - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr), which has a PEG of 2.3 and a yield of 3.3%, as well as Tiffany & Co. (TIF - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr), which sports a PEG of 1.5 and a 1.3% yield.
The only stock that Buffett and Gates (through his Cascade Investments vehicle) have in common is Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr - Rating), Buffett’s holding company, which is primarily in the insurance business but has numerous other divisions — everything from uniform manufacturing, construction materials, carpeting, manufactured homes and furniture.
Buffett has just set up a bond insurance division for Berkshire, which will compete with MBIA (MBI - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr - Rating) and Ambac Financial Group (ABK - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr - Rating). The stock, which in the past year has traded between $103,800 and $151,650, has a P/E ratio of 16.
Berkshire Hathaway is favored by another top trader, Mohnish Pabrai, who recently increased his position in the stock. His $300 million Pabrai Fund, which specializes in deep value investing, has generated an average annual return of 26% since 1999. Pabrai also owns Harvest Natural Resources (HNR - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr), which has negative earnings but a forward P/E of 14, Ternium SA (TX - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr - Rating), which has a PEG of 1.9 and a yield of 1.3%, and MDC Holdings (MDC - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr - Rating), which has a yield of 2.6% but negative earnings.
