President Mwanawasa has with immediate effect relieved, Information Minister, Vernon Mwaanga of his duties. The president has also revoked Mr. Mwaanga’s nomination as member of Parliament and removed him as parliamentary Chief Whip.

Mr. Mwanawasa has further, revoked Mr. Mwaanga’s nomination as a member of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) National Executive Committee, which is subject to ratification by the National Executive Committee of the party.

Mr. Mwaanga’s dismisal follows his recent visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo where he was sent as a special envoy for President Mwanawasa. He was sent there to discuss the closure of Kasumbalesa border post with Congolese President, Joseph Kabila.

Trucks transporting Copper concentrates from the DRC were recently banned from crossing into that country. President Mwanawasa said Mr. Mwaanga’s handling of the assignment was irresponsible and substantially departed from his expectations of him, as a president’s special envoy.

Mr. Mwanawasa said though he read about Mr. Mwaanga’s conduct, while in the DRC in the Post Newspaper, this was confirmed when he received a DVD on two press conferences that Mr. Mwwanga addressed in the DRC.

The president said Mr. Mwaanga’s handling of this assignment makes his position in cabinet or any public or party office in the current admnistration untenable. The president has wished Mr. Mwaanga success in his future endeavours.

This is contained in a statement released to Zambia National Broadcasting COrporation (ZNBC) news by the president’s Special Assistant for Press and Public relations, John Musukuma.
